FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is Kangaroo Kids different from other schools? Most schools are now doing the same activities and concepts.

A. We have a curriculum team who conducts research and updates the curriculum regularly, also the curriculum sent to centers is extremely detailed hence the teachers are able to implement it effectively.

Teachers implement the curriculum in a way that best serves a child.

E.g. while doing the concept of seasons – when children call a thermometer a ruler, usually teachers would say no that’s incorrect; as a result of which the child feels demeaned and looses confidence.

However at Kangaroo Kids we try and connect to children’s knowledge and encourage them. In a situation like this, we would tell the child, yes it is an instrument of measurement however it is used to measure the temperature.

We are able to include such strategies as we have 25 years of experience and all of this is constantly updated in the curriculum documents and trainings.

Q. Do you have a tie-up with any of the high schools?

A. We do not have tie-ups with any schools; however our curriculum is extremely strong. We are the preferred preschool providers for most high schools.

Q. My child is 1.5 years ….is she too young to start school or should we wait until she turns two?

A. School is not only about academics….At Kangaroo Kids we look into the holistic development of children – development in different domains i.e. Cognitive, Language, Social/Emotional, Physical & Spiritual…..At 1.5 the focus is more on peer interaction and development of social skills.

Times have changed from when toddlers had grandparents and parents interacting with them for most of the day and homes had wide open places for kids to crawl. Today the space in homes is not available also the interaction amongst toddlers is stimulating and helps development.

Q. Do you follow the Play way method of teaching or the Montessori Method?

A. At Kangaroo Kids we believe that there is no one best method through which all the children learn…hence we have incorporated the best practices of all the theorists to ensure that learning is engaging, fun and meaningful.

Maria Montessori designed her style of imparting learning a long time ago. Today we have access to so many kinds of findings from the field of neuroscience that we should use. These findings tell us a lot about motivation, learning hooks and how the brain best engages, learns and retains information.

Q. Do children get to do physical activities?

A. Since we believe in the holistic development of children; activities to develop the fine and the large muscles are conducted during the day.

E.g.

To develop the fine muscles – dough play, threading beads, scribbling with crayons, etc.

To develop the large muscles – gross motor activities are conducted – hopping around a circle, walking on balancing beams, crawling through the tunnel, etc.

In fact we use a perceptual motor programme. Children’s physical movement have an impact on the brain development and later academic learning. We use the PMP to encourage this.

E.g.  Children are involved in cross lateral movements in which they cross their body lines to conduct art activities.

Also, revision of concepts is done through the PMP by hopping around a circle or walking on letter patterns made on the floor.

Q. When do the children start writing?

A. They engage in an array of pre-writing activities in Playgroup and Pre-Nursery that enhances left to right & top to bottom progression and finger dexterity.

Pattern writing is introduced in Nursery

Q. What are the events that you have during the year?

A. Theme related special days and events are conducted throughout the year….Annual events such as Grandparents Tea party, Sense Booth, Sports Day and the Concert ensure 100% participation from children as there are no eliminations.

Q. Do you give homework to kids?

A. Across levels home extension is given to reinforce concepts introduced in class.

This work at preschool level is given to children to develop –

· Time management skills

· To help children work independently and

· Most importantly for parents to share quality time with children.

Q. In which language do the teachers communicate with children?

A. our first mode of communication is in English; however if necessary teachers sometimes speak in Hindi to make children feel comfortable and they settle.

Q. My child only speaks a few words…will this be a matter of concern?

A. There is nothing to worry since most children at this age speak only a few words when they join; but through constant interaction in class children pick up new words…Activities conducted in class help in vocabulary building and language development.

Q. What about potty training, since my child is not potty trained? Who accompanies children to the washroom?

A. It is absolutely fine if children are not potty trained. Children are sent to the washroom at regular intervals to help them not to soil their clothes and get into the habit of visiting the washroom when required.

However, during the settling period we request parents to make children wear diapers since children cry a lot and soil their clothes often.

The ancillary staff members accompany children to the washroom.

Q. What is the security measures followed in school?

A. Once the children are settled no one is allowed to wait in the school premises. The main gate, safety gates, main door and the class door are all kept shut to ensure children’s safety.

Security guard- the guard is stationed at the gate at all times. No outsider is allowed to enter the school premises without an entry in the book. The guard also ensures that no child leaves the school premises unaccompanied.

Handovers – Children are handed over only against the receipt of the bearer card given by the school. All parents & care-takers have to compulsorily carry the card.

Q. What is the discipline policy followed at school?

A. We do not resort to any kind of punishment in school. Children are spoken to, by the class facilitators in case of an issue/concern. Children lay down rules and consequence for the same in case of non-compliance to hold them accountable for their own actions.

The in-house counselor observes children on a regular basis and assists facilitators with strategies for behaviour management. A meeting with the respective parent is also held to work in cooperation to assist the child.

In fact teachers are taught behavior modification strategies such as the VAK – visual, auditory and kinaesthetic ways for modification. Instead of teachers calling out to children across the class, they go to children and give them a soft touch to make them understand behavior.

Also teachers avoid using more of DONT’S and NO’s and rather give children choices of what they can do and what they should do.

E.g. if a child scribbles on the wall with crayons the teacher provides the child with a sheet of paper and asks him to scribble on that.

In this way children understand the correct ways of behavior.

Q. What do you do in case of illness/tie-ups with any doctor or hospital?

A. As a policy parents are requested not to send children to school if they are unwell. Any illness beyond 3 days will require a doctor’s fitness/medical certificate without which the children are not taken into class.

Also if any child is unwell or running temperature at school, he/she is sent back home.

In case of injuries, accidents, etc. immediate First Aid is given to the children at school and parents are promptly informed about the same.

For emergencies we have a tie up with Noida Medical Centre and Prakash Hospital.

A. All our main teachers are ECCE qualified though the co-teachers may or may not be ECCE qualified but they all go through a stringent recruitment process before being appointed.

The uniqueness is that we have a detailed induction before teachers enter class as well as detailed daily curriculum execution plans so that learning is seamless.

Q. In case of children joining late or are lagging behind in curriculum, what extra support is provided by the school?

Q. Can parents visit the school during school hours and stay in the classroom with the children for 1-2 hrs to get a feel of the curriculum and teacher interaction?

A. We are an extremely transparent school and hence have an open door policy. Parents are allowed to sit in classes and see a running session after informing the school prior ; however to ensure that children are not distracted and the curriculum is not affected, we ask parents to sit in another section and not their own child’s class.

Q. What will be the rate of the fee hike every year?

A. CBSE guidelines are followed.

Q. Can our fees be transferred to the other centers as we may be shifting?

A. Since the management is different at different centers, the fees will have to be paid again.; however if the management is the same the fees need  not be paid again.

E.g. if a child transfers from the school in Baroda to the school in Mumbai – Santacruz the fees need not be paid again.
